We’re passionate about enriching lives through the thoughtful design of modern, residential spaces.

Philosophy

Unfold Architecture designs custom homes to be a direct reflection of the life you want to live and the unique qualities that surround it. Our belief is that the best homes are deeply personal — a place to unwind and connect. A place for stillness and play.

We combine our responsibility to our client’s vision with our responsibility to be good stewards of the earth; incorporating sustainable building practices along the way. This, along with our use of the latest technology, results in an engaging design process and a highly accurate product.

Team

Our team is tech-forward and agile. We obsess over materials and look to leverage light and landscape to create emotion. We take pride in our collaborative approach — designing each home in response to both the client’s unique aspirations and the context of the site.

Mike Gray

Co-founder, Architect, AIA

With a love of both built and natural environments, Mike brings a refined balance of indoor and outdoor connection to his work.

After earning his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Iowa State, Mike worked for a number of years in healthcare, higher education and corporate architecture sectors.

With a keen eye for technical details, Mike can focus on what really makes a home stand out — thoughtful use of light, lines and form. The little things that make the biggest statements.

Mike can be reached directly at mike@unfoldarchitecture.com - If he’s out of the office, he’s likely on a trail somewhere taking in the view.

Greg Vose

Co-founder, Architect, AIA

Since childhood, Greg has been inspired to create and bring something new into the world. It’s this passion that brought him to Iowa State where he earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree— and where he’d meet his future business partner, Mike.

Following graduation, Greg joined an award winning residential architecture firm in California — working on mountain homes throughout the Lake Tahoe region. He brought this experience and love for residential architecture with him as he made his way back to the Midwest over the next few years.

Greg believes a home’s design should react to each individual’s unique lifestyle, elevate even the most mundane of spaces and celebrate the life being lived within it.

Greg can be reached directly at greg@unfoldarchitecture.com - If he’s out of the office, you’ll most likely find him restaurant hopping with his wife, Lauren.

Evan Pukal

Architectural Associate, Associate AIA

Interested in both the art and engineering of architecture, Evan brings versatility and a problem-solving mindset to his work at Unfold.

Earning his Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota, Evan began his career in commercial architecture working on civic, senior living, and K-12 education projects. After three years in the field, Evan went back to school to earn his Masters of Architecture from North Dakota State University.

Pairing his technical background and attention to detail with his keen ear and ability to respond to client needs, Evan strives to design homes that serve each client's unique lifestyle.

Evan can be reached directly at evan@unfoldarchitecture.com - If he’s out of the office, he can usually be found enjoying the outdoors with his wife, Joanna and son, Declan.

Jack Peterson

Project Architect, AIA

As a teenager, Jack spent many summers helping to renovate and expand his family’s northern Minnesota cabin. The process of designing spaces for groups to gather and connect with the outdoors is what drew him to pursue a career in architecture.

After achieving a Bachelors and Master of Architecture degree from North Dakota State University, Jack began his professional career with a large firm in St. Paul Minnesota. Here, he gained exposure to the intricacies of large-scale commercial projects.

While this experience proved invaluable, his heart was always back at the family cabin. He joined the Unfold team to help create functional and biophilic spaces for families like his.

Jack can be reached directly at jack@unfoldarchitecture.com – If he’s out of the office, you can likely find him on a golf course or (you guessed it) at the cabin.

Process

Unfold Architecture's process is personal and intentional - each step moving us closer to shaping a truly intimate and unique home.

Discover

Setting you up to think deeply about what you're looking for in your new home, we start the process with a planning questionnaire. We'll meet to review and discuss your answers while honing in your functional needs and aesthetic preferences. The Discovery Meeting and subsequent Project Brief lay the foundation for a program that will support how you want to live.
  • In the Discovery phase, the following typically takes place:
  • Intake Questionnaire
  • Discovery Meeting
  • Residential Planning Questionnaire
  • Project Brief
  • Approval of Design Proposal

Define

With a program and foundation for a successful project approved, we begin to consider the physical parameters of your home. We kick off this phase with a site visit. Discussions focused on constraints and opportunities give way to visual exploration via modeling and analysis. Through this process, you’ll see unique directions for the general form of your homes exterior.
  • We begin to define the project through:
  • Site Visit
  • Architectural Design Kickoff Meeting
  • Approval of Project Programming and Narrative

Develop

The bulk of our collaborative planning and design work takes place during this phase. We’ll meet several times — making design revisions along the way with a constant progression of detail. Moving from adjacency diagrams (how interior spaces connect), to detailed floor plans all the way to photorealistic renderings, the process will enable you to visualize all aspects of your future home.
  • We begin to develop the project via:
  • Conceptual Design Review Meetings
  • Preliminary Pricing Exercise
  • Approval of Architectural Design
  • Interior Design Exploration

Detail

With the overall floor plan and design approved, we begin to focus on the critical details. Together, we’ll dive into every aspect of the home from the foundation to the roof peak. A set of construction documents will be developed to coordinate with all the respective consulting engineers and designers required to build a home. Coordinating with the contractor and interior design team leads us to a detailed budget and construction schedule.
  • In the Detail phase, the following typically takes place:
  • Interior Design Selection Meetings
  • Construction Documentation
  • Exterior Finishes Review
  • Final Pricing Estimates
  • Approval of Construction Contract

Deliver

It’s time to build. We’ll hand off 100% Construction Documents to the construction teams and craftsmen that will build your home. We stay engaged through this entire process up until the keys are in your hands. We’ll attend site reviews, reviewing fabrication drawings and meet with the contractor as needed to ensure everything is executed as planned.
  • During the Deliver phase, the following typically takes place:
  • Building Permitting
  • Key Site Walks
  • Construction Kick Off
  • Project Closeout
